Dog Breed Information

The Schipperke is a Belgian breed with a long history. They are thought to be descendants of the Leauvenaar, a black sheepdog. The Schipperke was created to be a small watchdog. They were often seen patrolling the canals between Brussels and Antwerp, keeping an eye on the passing vessels.

The Schipperke dogs have the current name when their breed club was established in 1888. They were previously known as the Spitske or Spits. Schipperke may be translated as “little shepherd” or “little captain.”

After seeing a Schipperke at a dog show in Brussels in 1885, Queen Marie Henriette made the Schipperke a famous pet. The Schipperke’s popularity increased, and the breed was finally introduced to the United States in 1888.

At shoulder height, male Schipperkes range between 11 and 13 inches while their female counterparts are between 10 and 12 inches. The grown male and female dogs weigh 15-18 pounds and 11-11 pounds on average respectively.

The Schipperke dogs are energetic, self-assured, and inquisitive. They remain their puppyish characteristics – even the troublesome ones – until they reach the age of 4 or 5 years.

They adore their human family and like to please them, but they also prefer to do things their way. If they’re permitted, the Schipperke dogs will be in charge of the family.

Moreover, they can be excellent watchdogs as they are protective, fearless, and instinctively wary of outsiders. They will challenge anybody who seems to have malicious intent.

Schipperkes are picky about whom they will be friendly to. In general, they usually restrict it to family members with whom they form close bonds.

Their mischief and stubbornness can make it hard for you to train them, but they can be quick learners with positive reinforcement.

Health problems

The Schipperke dogs are susceptible to certain health issues including Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Autoimmune Thyroiditis, Epilepsy, Patellar Luxation, and Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IIIB.

The Schipperke life span varies between 13 and 15 years old.

Life with a Schipperke

It’s easy to care for such an adaptable breed like the Schipperkes. However, they should live inside with their human family because they are not tolerant towards the heat.

As long as they get lots of daily exercises which should last no less than 30 minutes, they usually adapt to all kinds of living conditions and families.

The Schipperke requires a daily dietary amount between 1 & 1/8 and 1 & ⅞ cups of high-quality kibbles, split into two meals.

Coat color & Grooming

The Schipperke color is basic black. Grooming them is a simple task including weekly brushing since they are clean dogs with little canine odor. However, they will be heavy shedders once or twice per year, which can be mitigated by a warm bath to remove dead hair.

Other grooming routines include dental care (no less than twice or three times per week) and nail trimming (once or twice per month).

The Schipperke breeders will charge you from $1,200 to $4,300 for a superior pedigree puppy. However, the average price for Schipperke puppies is approximately $700.

Although the Schipperke dogs’ small size and low-maintenance coat are appealing, their intelligence and insatiable curiosity can get them into trouble.

They can live in almost any house, even apartments, as long as they can do a lot of exercise.

On the other hand, their independence can be difficult for new pet parents to manage. However, you’ll gain a great watchdog as well as a satisfied, caring family member if you can offer your Schipperke patient training and physical exercises while maintaining a good sense of humor.
