Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, was discovered unresponsive and experiencing an apparent overdose at his Carmel, Indiana home on December 8, as per details outlined in a police report obtained by CNN. The report stated that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m., with responding officers describing Irsay, 64, as “unresponsive, breathing, but turning blue.”
The Carmel Police Department’s report officially categorized the episode as an overdose. According to the report, Irsay had fallen in the bathroom but was later moved to a bed in the residence, where officers found him with oxygen in his nose. The responding officer administered one dose of Narcan to Irsay, a drug utilized to reverse opioid overdoses and revive individuals within minutes. While the report mentioned that Irsay responded slightly to the Narcan, it also noted that paramedics arrived promptly and took over the situation.
The Colts issued a statement in response to the report, indicating that Irsay is “continuing to recover from his respiratory illness.” They emphasized that there would be no further comments on his personal health and requested respect for the privacy of Jim and his family.
The December police report did not specify the substance Irsay had ingested prior to the authorities’ arrival. In a Real Sports interview on HBO in November, Irsay revealed that he had been to rehab at least 15 times and had previously experienced an overdose from combining multiple drugs simultaneously.
Notably, Irsay had faced legal troubles in 2014 when arrested for driving while intoxicated. During that incident, police discovered prescription drugs in pill bottles, and Irsay later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, receiving one year of probation. Irsay has been the owner of the Indianapolis Colts since December 1997, following the passing of his father, Robert Irsay.
