Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey will not face charges in California following an investigation into potential involvement in a relationship with a minor, as announced by the Newport Beach Police Department on Wednesday.
The police stated that they were “unable to corroborate any criminal activity” related to Giddey. CNN reached out to the NBA and the Thunder for comments but has not received an immediate response.
The investigation was initiated in November after online information circulated regarding a supposed relationship between Giddey, 21, and a female minor. The connection, if any, between Giddey and Newport Beach remains unclear.
In response to questions about social media posts suggesting a relationship, Giddey mentioned in November, “I understand the question obviously, but there’s no further comment right now. … I understand you guys want to know about it but just right now, I don’t have anything to say.”
During that time, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault also refrained from commenting, labeling it a “personal matter.”
Despite the ongoing investigation, Giddey, an Australian player in his third year, has continued to play and is averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. The Thunder are scheduled to play against the Jazz in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Thursday.
